Learn what heli-sledding means, how it compares with heli-skiing and cat-skiing, and how to plan a guided snowmobile trip near Ridder.

Heli-sledding is helicopter-accessed deep-snow snowmobiling. At Altai Mountains Resort, it takes you with a guide into the Western Altai for a riding day beyond the usual approach by snowmobile alone. It is for riders who want to spend their day on a snowmobile rather than on skis or a snowboard.
Our heli-sled expeditions begin from Ridder Lodge in Ulba village near Ridder, East Kazakhstan. Here is how the format works, how it differs from heli-skiing and cat-skiing, and what to consider as you plan your trip.
What heli-sledding means
At Altai Mountains Resort, heli-sledding means helicopter-accessed snowmobile riding. A helicopter takes the group into the riding area, while snowmobiles are positioned in advance and the day continues with a guide. Routes, flight arrangements, group plans and daily timing depend on conditions and your chosen programme.
Heli-sledding is designed for small private groups of four guests with one guide. You can explore it alongside guided snowmobiling, training, rentals and Snow Safari outings in our deep-snow experiences.
Ridder lies in Kazakhstan’s Western Altai, rather than Russia’s Altai Republic. This matters when comparing maps, airports, entry arrangements and activity providers: your journey begins in East Kazakhstan, near Ridder.
Heli-sledding at Altai Mountains Resort
A heli-sled day brings together mountain access, guided riding and a small-group format. The usual heli-sled season runs from mid-January to early April, although snow, weather and operating conditions shape each departure.
This is deep-snow snowmobiling in a mountain setting, not a fixed lift-style schedule. Your guide leads decisions on the ground, and leaving some flexibility in your wider itinerary is sensible when riding is the main reason for your visit.
Ridder Lodge is your base at the resort, with Restaurant Altai and Altai Banya nearby for time away from the snow. Accommodation, transfers, activities and equipment can be arranged individually or around the programme available for your dates.
Heli-sledding vs heli-skiing and cat-skiing
These activities share mountain terrain and guided access, but they use different ways of travelling through it.
Activity | Mountain access | Descent or travel on snow | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
Heli-sledding | Helicopter access, then snowmobile riding | Snowmobile | Confident riders seeking guided deep-snow snowmobiling |
Heli-skiing | Helicopter | Skis or snowboard | Experienced off-piste skiers and snowboarders |
Cat-skiing | Snowcat | Skis or snowboard | Skiers and snowboarders who prefer over-snow vehicle access |
Guided snowmobiling | Snowmobile from the outset | Snowmobile | Riders choosing an introductory tour or a guided riding day |
If skis or a snowboard are your focus, explore our heli-skiing or cat-skiing and freeriding options. If you are new to snowmobiles, Snow Safari tours and training offer a more appropriate introduction.
Experience, fitness and gear
Deep snow asks more of a rider than a prepared trail. You use body position to steer and balance, often ride standing up, and need the stamina to spend extended time outdoors in winter conditions. Previous snowmobile experience is a strong foundation for heli-sledding; beginners are better served by training or a Snow Safari before moving on to a helicopter-accessed day.
Good general fitness will make the experience more enjoyable. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are unsure whether you can manage cold and exertion, speak with a qualified clinician and our team as you plan. This guide cannot replace medical advice.
Warm layers, windproof outerwear, suitable boots, gloves and goggles are central to a comfortable day. Equipment options reviewed on 30 July 2026 included apparel setup rental at 85,000 KZT and a Mountain Setup at 44,000 KZT, including an avalanche backpack, radio and lunch box. Our booking team can outline the equipment available for your departure and what you should bring yourself.
Safety and weather contingencies
Mountain snowmobiling and helicopter travel involve real risk. For deep-snow operations, our safety approach includes activity briefings, equipment checks, avalanche equipment and training, GPS or satellite communication, emergency protocols and qualified guides. These measures support careful decision-making in the mountains, but they do not remove the inherent risks of winter conditions.
For travel in avalanche terrain, Avalanche.org recommends carrying a transceiver, probe and shovel, together with the knowledge to use them. Your programme team can explain the equipment and training that apply to your planned day.
Helicopter passengers should follow the crew’s briefing at all times. EASA’s helicopter passenger guidance covers controlled approaches, secured doors and harnesses, and keeping clear of rotor hazards. Weather and visibility can alter mountain operations, and our operations team decides whether flying can proceed on the day.
Getting to Ridder
Altai Mountains Resort is at Shosseynaya Street 65, Ulba village, Ridder 071300. From Öskemen (Ust-Kamenogorsk), the road journey is approximately 120 km and usually takes around 1.5–2 hours, with winter conditions affecting travel time. Private road transfers from Öskemen can be arranged through our booking team.
Airline routes and connections to Öskemen vary by departure city and travel date. British visitors can refer to the UK government’s Kazakhstan entry requirements for passport, visa and QazETA guidance relevant to their nationality. Travellers with other passports should follow the travel guidance issued for their own nationality.
Some Kazakhstan itineraries require a pass to enter or stay in a border strip. Kazakhstan’s border-strip pass service provides the relevant process, and our booking team can help you understand whether your planned riding area raises a border-zone question.
Costs and what is included
Heli-sled expeditions are priced individually because dates, group size, programme design and flight arrangements all shape the cost. Our booking team can prepare a clear outline of accommodation, transfers, guide services, snowmobile and equipment arrangements, meals, flight elements and payment terms for your dates.
For accommodation, rates reviewed on 30 July 2026 began at 59,000 KZT and 99,000 KZT per room per night for Superior TWIN rooms, and at 69,000 KZT and 109,000 KZT per room per night for Superior DBL rooms, depending on the season. See the current Ridder Lodge accommodation details as you plan your stay.
Planning your heli-sled trip
When you contact us, share your preferred dates, number of riders, snowmobile experience, equipment needs and the number of days you would like to keep available for riding. Our team can then shape a suitable proposal around the season, transfers and current mountain conditions. It is worth leaving some room around flights and onward travel, as weather can change a mountain programme. Our guide to the Western Altai setting offers useful local context, and the booking page is the direct route to begin planning your heli-sled days.

FAQ
Is heli-sledding the same as heli-skiing?
No. Both use helicopter access, but heli-skiing is done on skis or a snowboard. In heli-sledding, the main activity is deep-snow riding on a snowmobile.
Can a beginner try heli-sledding in Kazakhstan?
Heli-sledding is better suited to riders with previous snowmobile experience. Altai Mountains Resort offers Snow Safari tours and snowmobile training for guests who want to build familiarity on the snow first.
How much does a heli-sled expedition cost at Altai Mountains Resort?
There is no single heli-sled price. Each programme is shaped around the dates, group and planned arrangements. Lodge room rates are available separately through the Ridder Lodge page.
How do I get from Öskemen Airport to the resort?
The resort is approximately 120 km from Öskemen, with an indicative road journey of 1.5–2 hours. Private road transfers can be arranged through Altai Mountains Resort as part of your travel plans.
